The paper “A Prosocial Digital Platform for Reducing Economic Inequality” wins the 2026 Symplatform Conference Best Paper Award

The Symplatform conference (https://symplatform.com) brings together academic knowledge and practice to study what platforms are, how they work and what they can become for people, organizations and our society. This year the conference was held at the Politecnico di Milano. My paper “Should I pay or should I go? A prosocial market platform for reducing economic ineuality” won the Best Conference Paper Award. The paper, coauthored with Remus Ilies, Garrett Brady, Cédric Gutierrez, and Uriel Stettner, reports findings from my experiment of a prosocial market platform that reduces economic inequality. The study tests the price subsidization design principle which I discuss in my book “The Cooperative Economy”. It shows how such price subsidization promotes a norm of prosocial behavior in a community, despite lack of social cohesion and limited prosocial inclinations of participants. This price subsidization platform gained sufficient support from high earners to subsidize low earners in their community, thus enhancing the purchasing power of low earners. It also produced greater satisfaction compared to the conventional market system, suggesting that digital platforms that have traditionally harmed society can benefit it with the right design.
